Time again for anemones to brighten up your home

There are various stories about how anemones got their name. One of them goes back to an ancient Greek legend involving a nymph named Anemona at the court of the goddess Flora.

Flora's husband, the god of the wind, fell in love with Anemona, so the jealous goddess turned her into a flower. According to another theory, the name of this flower was derived from anemos, the Greek word for 'wind', since the seeds of anemones are distributed by the wind.

The most familiar anemone (Anemone coronaria) develops a saucer-shaped flower on a single stem and blooms predominantly in the spring. A number of years ago, a new species known as the Japanese anemone became available. The varieties of this species flower from August to late autumn. Their stems are taller, branched, and have several smaller flowers instead of one large one. Their flowers are easily visible since they protrude much higher than their leaves. The flowers of some anemone species produce seed pods that will be blown about by the wind, germinate and grow into new plants.

We offer both spring and autumn-flowering anemones. The more familiar spring-flowering anemones are available in colours that include blue, purple, maroon and white, while Japanese anemones come in cerise, bronze and white. See the entire assortment at our webshop.
