Forced bulbs in pots for an early spring!

Forced bulbs in pots are the perfect solution for anyone who just can't wait for spring to come. Unlike the flower bulbs planted in the autumn for flowering in the spring, these forced bulbs in pots become available as early as January. So we can enjoy these spring flowers before their natural flowering period, growers have a little trick up their sleeves.

To produce flowers, bulbs need a cold period. For this reason, they spend a few weeks at very cold temperatures (pre-chilling) and are then warmed up again (forcing). This makes them 'think' it's spring, so they start to bloom. The flowers' entire development can be followed since these bulbs are visible above the soil level.

Familiar kinds of flower bulbs produced as forced bulbs in pots include daffodils with their yellow trumpet-shaped flowers, grape hyacinths with flowers that really do look like clusters of purple grapes, and the colourful purple, white and yellow crocuses. Some of these spring-flowering bulbs do not only provide sparkling colours but also a bewitching scent. They are also used in what is called 'lasagne planting'. This involves planting the flower bulbs one above each according to their flowering period with the earliest to flower planted on top. They will then bloom in succession with each layer flowering simultaneously. The result is a cheerful display, time after time. Say good-bye to winter and hello to an early spring!
