Roses add colour to public green spaces

Roses make a colourful addition to exterior plantscaping. Thanks to breeding, we can choose from a broad range of strong, healthy shrub roses that flower abundantly and for extended periods. These modern shrub roses have a high ornamental value, are low-maintenance and increase biodiversity. Furthermore, once planted, such modern roses will last for years.

New shrub roses that are specifically suited for exterior plantscaping are regularly launched on the market. These are strong, healthy, low-maintenance plants. For example, the shrubs have a sufficiently suppressing effect on weeds. With most cultivars, the shrub cleans itself, automatically getting rid of dead flowers.

Shrub roses come in a variety of colours and scents. They flower abundantly and long-lastingly, with single (open), semi-double or fully double flowers. They bloom from June until late in autumn.

Roses contribute to the benefits of biodiversity. The flowers they produce are loaded with pollen: an important source of food for all kinds of bees, bumblebees, hoverflies and beetles. Many roses will produce rosehips after flowering; these will be eaten mainly by birds.

Whether for flower beds, flower containers, or green walls, there will always be a strong healthy rose variety suitable for the location. Upright rose bushes, for example, are the perfect choice for traditional rose beds, while modern shrub roses with wider habits can be used for either taller or low hedges. Finally, roses can be combined effectively with other shrubs, perennials and flower bulbs.

Rose facts

  • Roses need at least 4 hours of sunlight a day; the more sun, the better.
  • The type of soil doesn't matter, as long as it is rich in nutrients, healthy and allows for good drainage.
  • Many roses are actually low-maintenance plants.
  • Most roses are drought-tolerant; providing water during dry periods is seldom necessary.
